If I call it CBD Massage is it less scary?
2021 marks seven years of Primal Therapeutics, cannabis massage being in business. I consider this a pretty huge deal. When I started my first business I had no idea what was ahead of me. The journey of being an entrepreneur is not one for the faint at heart. You have to be like jello – like goopy fluid, ready and willing to wiggle your way from one moment to the next, with nothing ever promised.
In 2017, I launched a class I called Cannabis Massage 101 in an effort to teach fellow massage therapists and healers how to do what I do. After all, I had been receiving calls since 2014 asking me how to perform this new modality. I called the class cannabis massage because it is not focused on any one cannabinoid. It actually teaches students about several of the 113 cannabinoids. But over the years I have begun to notice that the word cannabis scares people.
The negative stigma still attached to this word, all these years after so much progress has been made continues to boggle my mind. In 2019, I began teaching my class for the International Esthetics Cosmetics and Spa Conferences. The first time I taught I had 10 or so students register and attend. I was scheduled in New York for the beginning of 2020 and my class was on its way to selling out with 40+ students. The only difference between Florida and New York, I called the class CBD Massage 101.
So if I call it CBD Massage is it less scary? Are you someone more inclined to take the class because it mentions one cannabinoid instead of the plant as a whole? If so, let’s lean into that fear. Let’s dig deep together and get to the bottom of the fear. One of my many goals in life is to educate as many people as possible about the benefits of cannabis plant medicine. What about the word cannabis brings you fear?
Perhaps your fear has been present in you since you were a child. The plant has been demonized for so long. A wonderful book that tells the real story of the cannabis plant is Jack Herer’s – “The Emperor Wears No Clothes.” This book was given to me by my oldest brother when I was a senior in high school. It changed my relationship with the plant forever. I use my copy he gave me every single time I teach Cannabis Massage. It is mandatory to understand the history of hemp and the cannabis plant before you go rubbing it all over someone’s body.
Cannabis is food, fiber, fuel, and medicine. That is why the government has done what it can to make you afraid of this miracle plant. It has the ability to put many industries out of business – (clears throat, ahemmm the cotton industry, the alcohol industry and the pharmaceutical industry, just to name a few.) There is no other plant on our planet that is capable of being so many things for so many people.
All thanks to our endogenous endocannabinoid system. A system in our bodies like our nervous system or digestive system. A system so simple and so complex with only one goal in mind – homeostasis, or balance. In Cannabis Massage 101 I give a beginners version of this system. There is so much to it though, I took a deep dive when I published 102 in 2020. There is so much science and research out there now. It is allowing me and encouraging me to continue creating more educational classes.
Classes for the masses, that is what I will continue to create. If you have any education needs, please reach out. I have written programs specifically for businesses needs. Don’t be afraid of the word cannabis or hemp. Understand what makes them different, and embrace all of the cannabinoids, not just CBD.
